Vusion Edge Sense is a digital shelving system that can do far more than simply display prices: this smart rail combines electronic labels, sensors and location tracking into a single, connected platform mounted directly on the edge of the shelf. Based on the Vusion Cloud IoT platform, Edge Sense turns every shelf into an active data point that detects what is happening in the shop in real time – and reacts accordingly.
Rather than individual, isolated labels, Edge Sense forms a continuous communication network running the entire length of the shelf: displays, sensors and mobile devices used by staff and customers exchange data continuously. This transforms the shelf not just into a place for price labelling, but into a central hub for stock management, customer engagement and in-store control.
- Centralised communication via an integrated Bluetooth Low Energy network along the entire rail
- Precise positioning in-store – for products, staff and customers
- Direct two-way connection to mobile devices for location-based services
- Significantly reduced energy and carbon footprint thanks to a centralised power supply for each track
- Modular click-fit system for quick assembly and easy display replacement
Traditional electronic price tags show how much a product costs. Vusion Edge Sense goes a decisive step further and turns the entire rail into a sensor network. Using integrated proximity sensors and device-to-device communication, the system detects the location of products, staff and customers within the shop – with a level of accuracy that traditional Wi-Fi or RFID solutions have not been able to offer until now.
For staff, this means that tasks such as restocking, stock-taking and finding their way around can be organised efficiently and without detours, because the system knows in real time where in the shop action is required. For customers, this creates new, personalised shopping experiences – from navigating to the product they are looking for to personalised offers that are displayed exactly where the purchase decision is made.
How does Vusion Edge Sense work?
At the heart of Edge Sense is the combination of smart rail hardware and the VusionOX protocol, which is based on the Bluetooth LE standard. This allows new features and software updates to be installed directly whilst the system is running, without the need to replace any hardware.
Connected to the Vusion Cloud, Edge Sense provides real-time geolocation and bidirectional beaconing: displays and mobile devices communicate with each other continuously, ensuring that location data, stock information and customer interactions are immediately available. The displays are mounted using a proprietary click-fit system.
A key advantage lies in the power supply: because a single power source supplies the entire track, energy consumption is significantly lower than with conventional ESL systems – we are talking about substantial savings.
